Ruth Spencer Brown, born to L.A. and Genevieve Spencer in Montgomery, Alabama, and raised in Greenwood, Florida, brought light and love into countless lives. After graduating high school, she married William Hubert Brown in 1952 and together, they raised four boys: Ron, Mike, Ken, and Greg (Thomas).
Ruth’s career saw her excel in insurance and banking, but she truly found her calling as the founding Executive Director of Sav-a-Life, a crisis pregnancy center in Dothan, Alabama. Under her leadership, the organization grew, providing vital support to young women and resulting in the births of hundreds of children. Ruth was also deeply involved with Cloverdale Methodist Church, even representing the Alabama West Florida Conference as a delegate at the 1992 United Methodist General Conference. Her advocacy for life and children’s welfare led her to become the first Executive Director for the Taskforce of United Methodists on Abortion and Sexuality, a national organization supporting pro-life causes within the United Methodist Church. Ruth’s impact on her community and in the lives of thousands facing hardship is immeasurable.
Ruth is survived by her sons: Ron Brown (wife Sandy, daughter Molly, her husband Parker, and their children Davis, Wesley, and Wyatt), Mike Brown (wife Debbie, son Eric, his wife Kristen, and their sons Alex and Nicholas), Ken Brown, and Thomas (Greg) Brown (wife Melissa, daughters Ashby and her husband Daniel, and Olivia).
Ruth’s generosity and unwavering faith are best exemplified by her favorite saying, "In giving, we receive." Her warmth and kindness touched everyone she met, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion. She exemplified Christ by committing her life to the service of others, her sons, her family, her friends and those in need served directly by her or through the organizations she led.
