Obituary: Mrs. Sarah Melvina Bridges Black
Mrs. Sarah Melvina Bridges Black, age 93, of Hartford, AL passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, May 8, 2019.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb with Mrs. Black’s grandson, Curtis Tillman Black officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
Mrs. Black was born February 26, 1926 in Geneva County, AL and lived in Hartford all of her life. She completed her undergraduate degree at Judson College and the University of Alabama. She completed a Mater’s Degree from Troy State, Fort Rucker, AL. She returned to Geneva County and taught every grade from first to the twelfth, ending her career as a Librarian at Geneva County High School. Mrs. Black was actively involved in the Daughters of the American Revolution and loved to research family history. Mrs. Black was a member of the Hartford Baptist Church.
Mrs. Black was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Curtis Black; parents, Dr. Barnard Tillman Bridges, Sr. and Mattie Carol Holley Bridges.
Survivors include two sons: Ponie Curtis Black (Charlene), Phoenix, AZ, and Wallace Tillman Black (Juliann), Dothan, AL; one daughter, Dr. Mary Carol Lee (Herman), Mobile, AL; one brother, Dr. Barnard Tillman Bridges, Jr. (Mabel), Sarasota, FL; six grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; other extended family and friends.
The family wishes to thank Mrs. Black’s special caregivers who added quality to her life during this past year: Jannie Franklin, Joyce Hatcher, and the Home Instead team.
