Mrs. Violet Ruth Freeman of Dothan passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Westside Terrace. She was 95.


Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Ed Wright, Reverend Paul Thompson, Reverend Woody Farrington and  Patty Farrington officiating. Graveside services will be held at Girard Cemetery in Phenix City, AL at 4 P.M. (EST).


 


The family will be receiving friends at the church from 10 to 11:30 A.M. Tuesday, April 16, 2013. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Partners in Ministry, Calvary Baptist Church, 901 Montezuma Ave, Dothan, AL.


 


Mrs. Freeman was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.She was a longtime resident of Phenix City before she moved to Dothan to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was very active throughout her life in many organizations. She was a member of the first graduating class of the Columbus Commercial Beauty School in January, 1946. She was named Woman of the Year in Phenix City in 1964. Mrs. Freeman served on the Board of Directors of the Girls Club of America, President of the Pilot Club of Phenix City in 1962-63; 63-64,and a  member of the Phenix City Women’s Club.


In 1964, Mrs. Freeman was Queen of the Phenix City Mardi Gras.. She assisted in the organization of the Russell County Hairdressers and Cosmetologist Association in 1958 and served as president the first two years. Mrs. Freeman did volunteer work for underprivileged children in the schools and through the Welfare Department. Mrs. Freeman also saw to it that patients of Cobb Memorial Hospital were given beauty care. She also gave lectures to girls at Central Jr. High on the care of their skin and hair. As a member of the Phenix City Women’s Civic Club, she assisted in furnishing books to the schools, the milk program and the Christmas stocking fund. Mrs. Freeman was instrumental in organizing the Russell County Chapter of the Alabama Mental Health Association and was elected as it’s first director. Mrs. Freeman was also as active member of the Womens of the Moose.


 


She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Chester Huel Freeman, two brothers, one sister, and a grandchild, Bradford S. Woods.


Survivors include daughter, Peggy Woods and her husband, Tom of Dothan; brother, Herman Elroy Hicks of Phenix City; grandchildren, Michael Devon Kiker, Kenneth R. Kiker (Susan), Ande Kiker (Lori), Blair Merritt, seven great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.


 


The members of the Votie Hodges Sunday School Class will serve as Honorary pallbearers.
