Vivian Hughes Howell, 87, a longtime resident of Dothan, died peacefully after a brief illness on June 9, 2016. Funeral services will be held at Ward Wilson Funeral Home on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.


 


Vivian was born on September 17, 1928 in Geneva County. She was the daughter of Charlie Wade and Lola Brookins Hughes and the oldest of seven children. She lived her early years in the Bay Springs community. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Dothan and enjoyed participating in the Doris Faulkner Sunday School Class. She was truly committed to leading her life through the Lord. In her early years, she dedicated her service to being a War Time teacher in the town of Malvern. She was later employed by Dr. Julian Turner for a number of years, transferred to the banking industry, and then to Well Jackson Oldsmobile where she began a 15 year profession in office accounting. She was also dedicated to the Fleet Reserve Association Ladies Auxiliary 386, VFW Post 3073.


 


She was an avid gardener, a wonderful cook and entertainer, and a lover of animals. She treasured her flowers, her yard, and her fur babies, Tiger, Sonny and Amber. She loved her family and had a special bond with her great grandchildren who loved her supply of apples and oreo cookies. She will be remembered as a generous mother, grandmother and friend to all those knew her.


 


Vivian is predeceased by her parents, her husband Jo Ed Howell, brothers Glen Earle, Gene and Charles Hughes, special Aunts Virgie McEntyre and Annie Wiggins, and a grandson Aaron Anderson. She is survived by her sisters, Marjorie Harris and Sandra Spivey, and a brother, Gerald (Louise) Hughes; children, Sharon (Willie) Houston, MarJean (Butch) Cook, David (Barbara) Anderson, Cass (Mary Sharon) Howell, Greg Howell, Barry (Lisa) Howell, and Mary Jo (Scott) Gilchrist. Grandchildren are Bill (Kara) DeLoney, Cameron (Kendall) DeLoney, Darlene Willis, Tajana (Almir) Mesic, Whitney (Sam) Brown, Allison (Bjorn) Eriksson, Lindsay, Austin and Logan Gilchrist, Tami (Jay) Keane, Kym and Summera Howell, and Kitt, Exie and Callie Howell, and William Edmondson. Great-grandchildren include Logan and Peyton DeLoney, Austin, Braxton, Carson and Dawson DeLoney, Garrit and Mason Willis, Noah Eriksson, Levi and Micah Brown, Alex, Jillian, Emme, Matthew and Katie Balli; a special nephew Michael (Starla) Crosby; sisters in law Patricia and Mary Sue Hughes and Nell Rich; numerous nieces and nephews and lifetime friend Charlotte Rawlett.


 


Serving as pallbearers will be Bill and Cameron DeLoney, Don and Chuck Spivey, Austin Gilchrist, and Kitt Howell.
