Mrs. Wenell Spann Powell of Samson, Alabama went to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday, July 21, 2012. She was 80.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, in the Flat Creek Assembly of God Church with Rev. Jimmy Eddins and Rev. Jack Chancey officiating. Mrs. Powell will be placed into the church one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, July 24, from 6 until 8 p.m.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Mrs. Powell was born November 6, 1931, in Coffee County, Alabama (Ino Community) to the late Raymond Alto and Bertha Elizabeth Mock Spann. She loved people and her home was always open to everyone. Her many friends were treated just like family. She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Powell was a lifelong member of the Assembly of God faith.
In addition to her parents her husband, Aaron Moses Powell, two sons, Hollis and Waylon Powell, as well as three brothers, Dorsey, Sr., James and Eddie Ray Spann, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include three daughters: Sarah Ward (Sammy), Brighton, MO, Ann VanVoorst (Jerry), Samson, Becky Sterns (Mark), Ocoee, FL; two daughters-in-law: Cecila Powell, Winter Garden, FL and Doris Powell, Samson; seven sisters: Vermell McDougald, Black, Thearmae Barnes (Wayne), Louise Pridgen (William), all of Kinston, Mary Ward (Billy) Livingston, AL, Maggie Nowling (Walter), Chancellor, Edna Yates (Randall), Darlington, FL, Lois Ard (Wesley), Gaskin, FL; two brothers: Rayburn Spann (Lisa), Donalsonville, GA and Randall Spann, Geneva; two sisters-in-law: Lucille Spann, Enterprise and Martha Spann, Daleville; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.
Grandsons Eugene Powell, Kevin VanVoorst, Greg Ward, Calvin VanVoorst, Kenneth Powell, Eddie Powell, Charles Powell and Chris Sterns will serve as pallbearers.
