Judy Carol Howard Byrd, a resident of Dothan, Alabama died peacefully Friday, January 5, 2024 at Flowers Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was 77.


Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Monday, January 8, 2024, in Clearman Chapel at Southern Heritage Funeral Home with Dr. Ricky Plummer officiating. Interment will be immediately following the service in Memorial Hill Cemetery with Southern Heritage Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 5PM to 7PM, Sunday, January 7, 2024, at the funeral home.


Judy was born to the late Thomas and Helen Gibson Howard on September 24, 1946, in Houston County, Alabama. She was a 1965 Graduate of Dothan High School. She began a career in the Houston County Sheriffs Department. During her five years of work under the late Sheriff A.B. Clark, because of her hard work and dedication, she caught the eye of the late Circuit Clerk, Julia Trant. After being persuaded to come to the Circuit Clerks Office, Mrs. Trant began to mentor her for the next fourteen years. Upon Mrs. Trant’s retirement, Judy was appointed Circuit Clerk of the 20th Judicial Circuit by Judge Ed Jackson. After her appointment, she would serve the people of Houston County as their Circuit Clerk for fourteen more years before retirement. During her service, she always tried to see the good in everyone and helped them to the best of her ability to solve their problems. Her hobbies included church softball, volleyball, coaching girls softball with her late husband Hugh Byrd, and making lasting memories with her family and friends. Judy loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of Selma Baptist Church for many years, serving on numerous committees. She will be dearly missed not only by those that loved and knew her, but also this community.


Judy was preceded in death by her husband of forty-four years Hugh Byrd; parents; and a sister, Phyllis Smith


Left to carry on her legacy are a son, Brent Snell (Sherry); four daughters, Monica Capps (Dwain), Tracy Kite, Lisa Barrett, and Amy Byrd; thirteen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren; a special aunt that she dearly loved, Shirley Howell (James), along with many cousins, nieces, and numerous friends.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Matt Snell, Bradley Capps, Ross Fuller, Dewayne Womack, Tracy Adams, Ronnie Rolland, and Tim Hartzell.
