Ms. Mary Smith Bowen, age 99, a resident of Ashford entered into the presence of Jesus, her Lord and Savior, on Monday, October 7, 2024 at a Dothan Hospital, after a short illness.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 12, 2024, in the chapel of Glover Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Carroll officiating, along with a special message by her son-in-law, William Holloman. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Howard Grove Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Cottonwood.
Mary was born on July 6, 1925, in Geneva County, to Wiley and Viola Smith. After her father’s death, the family moved from Malvern to the Lovetown community near Cottonwood.
After her marriage and the birth of her first daughter, Mary and her husband lived a short period of time in Columbus, GA. They then moved to Ashford and there spent the remainder of their lives.
Mary was predeceased by her parents; an infant sister, Daisy; her husband, Vester Royce “Bud” Bowen, daughter, Sylvia Holloman, a son in law, Doug Griffin, and infant great grandson, Spencer Cordle. In addition, Mary was the sole survivor of her generation in her family. She was predeceased by siblings, Mamie, Minnie, Marvin, Murray, Milton, Maxwell, and Mildred and by their spouses.
Left to cherish the wonderful memories of her life are her daughter, Luverne Griffin, Georgiana, AL; a son in law, William Holloman, Ashford, AL; two granddaughters, Mary-Elizabeth Cordle (Aaron), Fairhope, AL; and Meredith Spray (Jason), Richmond, VA; a grandson, Lindsey Conway (Colleen), Tuscaloosa, AL; great grandchildren, Mary Claire and Phillip Cordle, Fairhope, AL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was an accomplished seamstress, an expert at fitting and tailoring men’s suits and altering ladies ready to wear. She constructed uniforms and dresses for Civil War reenactments and she also worked at the local sewing factory in order to ensure both her daughters an education.
Flowers will be accepted, but we encourage donations to be made to the Howard Grove FWB Church Cemetery, 4041 Hickory Grove Road Cottonwood, AL 36320.
Our appreciation is extended to Greg Buntin, David Holloman, Roane Lawler, Sammy Roney, Wallace Reynolds, and Steve Reynolds for graciously serving as pallbearers.
