Nell Jean Sanders, 87, passed away January 23, 2024, peacefully at home. Jean (as she was known) was born in Coffee Springs, Alabama to the late James W. and Velia Jones. She graduated from Coffee Springs High School and Wallace Community College. She was preceded in death by her husband Colonel Bobby R. Sanders. They shared life and marriage together for a little over 40 years.
Geneva was their home where they raised two boys, Steve and Chris Sanders. They participated in local civic groups and community activities while the children were growing up in Geneva. Jean operated a hair salon business in Geneva for 13 years.
After Jean’s children were grown, her husband, Bobby, took a tour of active duty with the Army Reserves where Bobby was a full bird, Colonel. They lived in St. Louis and Atlanta as part of Bobby’s tenure in the Army before his retirement. They then returned to Geneva and built a home in 1996.
Jean and Bobby enjoyed travel and were able to visit several countries in Europe. Jean, along with a few friends, stepped out of her comfort zone and worked at Yellowstone National Park for a summer to enjoy the spectacular hiking trails, beautiful views, wildlife and the mountainous terrain.
Jean was a member of Maple Avenue Baptist Church.
She will be remembered as a loving spouse and mother who always placed her children and husband’s priorities above her own.
Jean is survived by her two sons and their wives Steve and Denise Sanders of Dothan, AL. and Chris and Debbie Sanders of Virginia Beach, VA.
Grandchildren are Dr. Stephen Sanders, Jr. (Alison) of Destin, FL., Stephanie Sanders Hagler, (Lance) of Dothan, AL., Sarah Elizabeth Sanders Jordan, (Chase) of Dothan, AL., Brian Sanders (Nyera) of Virginia Beach, VA., Russell Sanders (Emily) of Leesburg, VA.
