Mrs. Gladys Townson Shaffield, of Ozark, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2016, with her loving family in attendance, a testimony to her long Christian life. She was 100 years old.
Funeral services will be graveside 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 10, 2016, in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama with Reverend Dr. Earl Tew and her great-grandson, Reverend Jonathan Brown officiating. Interment will follow, Johns-Ridout’s Mortuary - Elmwood Chapel in Birmingham officiating. The family will receive friends Friday morning in the funeral home from 10:00 A.M. until service time. Holman Funeral Home and Cremations of Ozark will be handling local arrangements.
Mrs. Shaffield was born in Cullman County, Alabama in 1915, but moved with her family to Birmingham at an early age. She resided there until she moved to Ozark in 1994 to be near her daughter and other family. Mrs. Shaffield was a charter member of Lakeside Baptist Church in Birmingham where she was active until she moved to Ozark. There she united with the Ozark Baptist Church where she was a faithful member of the Lydia Sunday School Class. She was also a devoted member of the Dale Medical Center Auxiliary where she served as a “Pink Lady” for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond F. Shaffield, Sr.; her parents, Daniel E. and Leola Haynes Townson; her brother, David Roy Townson; her sisters, Velma Townson, Ruby Gorman, and Dolly Martin; son-in-law, Earl T. Brown; and great granddaughter, Pandora Nicole Motley.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty S. Brown, Ozark; son, Raymond Frank Shaffield, Jr., Ozark; five grandchildren, Kerry Brown (Faye), Ozark, E. Terry Brown (Jean), Montgomery, Nanci Ludlam (Glenn), Ozark, David Brown (Patti), Memphis, TN, and Daniel Shaffield (Mitzi), Birmingham. Nine great grandchildren and thirteen great-great grandchildren also survive.
Serving as active pallbearers will be her grandsons and great grandsons: Kerry Brown, Terry Brown, David Brown, Logan Brown, Daniel Shaffield, Matthew Brown, Christopher Motley, Jonathan Brown, and Glenn Tappan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ozark Baptist Church Building Fund, 282 South Union Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360.
