Olive Rebecca Smith
Olive Rebecca Smith, of Dothan, died Wednesday, November 26, 2014. She was 96.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Oates officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church of Dothan Fellowship Hall Fund or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
Mrs. Smith was born August 11, 1918 in Elwood, Indiana to Guy and Mamie (Phifer) Burdsall and lived her early life there. She attended Elwood Elementary and High School and later went to Anderson Business School. She lived in many states including Indiana, Michigan, Maine, Maryland, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Florida and Alabama. In 1939, she married Clarence Cook; he died in WWII. On August 10, 1946, she married Wayne Smith who died in 2004.
Mrs. Smith worked many years as an accountant and bookkeeper for a variety of businesses. She enjoyed going to the Indianapolis 500 for 50 years, playing golf, bowling, decorating the various homes she lived in and taking care of her much loved poodle, Tippi. She worked with Child Evangelism Fellowship and made sure the Easter story and Christmas story was told in the Dothan schools. She also coordinated Meals on Wheels for 10 years and collected money for Wednesday night suppers at First Presbyterian Church
Mrs. Smith was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Dothan and a founding member of Saint Stephens Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of Dothan Country Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and a volunteer and scorer for Future Masters Golf Tournament.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Mamie Burdsall; husbands, Clarence Cook and Wayne Smith; sister, Maxine Riser; brother, Forrest Burdsall; brothers-in-law, Hansel and Leon Smith; sisters-in-law, Mary and Delores Smith; and son-in-law, Hal Colby.
Survivors include her son, Merrill Smith (Joanne Knoblock) of Orange, CA; daughter, Deborah Colby of Grand Junction, CO; granddaughter, Cassie Smith of Brooklyn, NY; four step-grandchildren, five great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and a brother-in-law, Richard Riser of Florida.
