NEWVILLE. . .Ophelia Hand McCoy, a resident of Newville, died early Tuesday morning, August 11, 2015, at her home. She was 95.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, August 13, 2015, in the Newville Baptist Church with Reverend Tim McCraney and Reverend Hugh D. Kirkland, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Thursday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 13, Newville, AL 36353 or to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303.
Mrs. McCoy was born and reared in the Bethlehem Community, near Headland, daughter of the late Henry Clay Hand and Rurah Ganarah Yance Hand. She lived in Newville most of her lifetime where she and her late husband owned and operated McCoy True Value Hardware. Mrs. McCoy was an active member of the Newville Baptist Church, the W.M.U., and was a former member of the church choir.
Mrs. McCoy was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny B. McCoy, a son, Gerald McCoy, four sisters, Wilma Walker, Lila Armstrong, Lois Hartley and Mary Susan Jones, six brothers, Theodore Hand, Leroy Hand, Midas Hand, Lamar Hand, Luther Hand and Glenn Hand.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Jeanine McCoy Holman (John Robert), Headland; a son, Jimmy McCoy (Dana), Dothan; seven grandchildren, Dana Johnson (Robert), Jim McCoy (Tammy), Leah Johnston (Dow), Shea Lawhorn (Steve), Chris Bradshaw (Teresa), Jana Brooks (John), and Rhonda Gwin (Dean); eighteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be the grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
The family would like to express their appreciation to caretakers, Janelle Johnson, Denise Williams, and Shirley Whitehead and also to Covenant Hospice, including Jessica Bures, for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. McCoy during her illness.
