Pat Kesler (Major, US Army, Ret) a resident of Dothan, died Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at his home. He was 80.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2011 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel on West Main Street with Rev. John McCullough and Father Isaiah Gillette officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 until 2:45 Friday prior to service time.

Burial with full military honors will follow in Daleville Memorial Gardens with Byrd Funeral Home directing. Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to the D.A.V.

Mr. Kesler was born to Lola May Nash and John David Kesler on March 27, 1931. At the age of 16, he entered the U.S. Army. In the Korean War, he helped to squelch the Chinese uprising at a Korean prison. In April of 1952, he married Mattie Elizabeth Means from Toccoa, Georgia. Together they raised four daughters, mostly in Daleville before retiring to Dothan.

Mr. Kesler spent time in Vietnam and was offered the Green Beret, but turned it down to be home with his wife and daughters after spending much time in war zones. After he became SFC, he went to Officer Training School at Ft. Benning, Georgia and became a commissioned officer, retiring after 20 years of active service. He piloted several different aircrafts and was an instructor pilot.

Mr. Kesler was active in his children’s PTA. He also sponsored many foreign students and families. He owned and operated his own used car lot and semi-truck company after retiring from the military. He had a kind heart for those less fortunate. He was a wonderful provider for his family and had love for all. He was a much loved son, brother, husband, father and friend and will be dearly missed. We are thankful to God that he is not in pain anymore, and that he is resting in God’s arms. Mr. Kesler was a member of First United Methodist Church of Daleville where he was a Deacon.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mattie Elizabeth Kesler of Dothan; four daughters, Beth Gillette and her husband, Rob, of Ft. Benning, GA, Pam Gleason and her husband, Paul, of Dothan, Kim Bullard and her husband, Brad, of Dothan, Terri Healy of Ft. Worth, Texas; seven grandchildren, Aaron and Chris Gillette, Brandi and Brooke Bray, Trevor and Troy Kesler and Amanda Healy; a sister, Joann Gillis of Gray, GA; several nieces and nephews.
