DOTHAN. . .Peggy Fulford Jones (78), a resident of Dothan, died surrounded by her sons and daughter-in-law late Friday afternoon, February 2, 2024, in Huntsville, Alabama.
Peggy Jones, daughter of the late Aubrey Fulford and Myrtle Spooner Fulford, was born in 1945 at Ft. McPherson (Atlanta), Georgia. She was reared in Napier Field, Alabama, as the middle of seven children and graduated from Dale County High School in 1963. Peggy earned her Cosmetology Instructor Diploma from George C. Wallace State Community College. She continued her education by earning a B.S in Education from Athens State College.
Peggy retired from the Dothan City Schools where she taught for 25 years, serving as Cosmetology Instructor at the Dothan Technology Center (DTC). While teaching at DTC Peggy was the VICA Chapter Advisor. In that position, she served the VICA Organization at the local, state and national level as a skills competition judge. Ultimately, she was recognized as the VICA National Teacher of the Year, in Las Vegas, NV. While teaching full time at DTC, Peggy and Benny owned and managed John’s Coiffures in the Northside Mall as well as beauty salons in Napier Field, Ozark, Eufaula, Abbeville and Albany, GA.
Many hours were spent traveling to baseball, football and basketball games to watch Butch and Tiger play ball. Peggy was the quintessential sports mother. Each spring, Peggy and Benny would travel to south Florida to watch MLB Spring Training games. They also enjoyed watching the Montgomery Biscuits, going on cruises with friends and family, as well as spending time at the casinos in Tunica and Biloxi, MS. A member of the Dothan Country Club, Peggy volunteered twenty-three years with the Future Masters Golf Tournament. She was a member of the Botanical Gardens, Landmark Park, Dothan Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Dothan Group. Peggy was an active worshiper in the United Methodist Church. Above all, she was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and she is already deeply missed.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Benjamin Franklin “Benny” Jones (Lt. Colonel, Alabama Army National Guard, Retired), a son, Zackery Jones, two sisters, Dorothy Herring and Joyce Lee and a brother, Tony Fulford.
