Peggy was born April 3, 1925, in Fort Gaines, daughter of the late William Grady Grimsley and Robbie McAllister Grimsley. Her grandparents were Susie and R.C. McAllister and Eoline and B.F. Grimsley.
After graduating from Fort Gaines High School in 1942, she attended Florida State College for Women and graduated in 1946. In 1950, she graduated from Tulane University with a Master’s Degree in Social Work. She was a member of The National Association of Social Workers.
Peggy was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and Florida State University Emeritus Club.
She was devoted to a career with the State of Georgia, Department of Family and Children Services. Her first job was with the Muscogee County Department of Family and Children Services, in Columbus, Georgia where she was a Child Welfare Worker.
While living in Columbus she met and subsequently married her husband, Buck. This was also the birthplace of their two sons, Allen and Bob.
In 1955, Peggy, Buck and their sons moved to Fort Gaines where they became an active part of the community. Fort Gaines has remained home through the years and was a great place to raise the children. Buck began his long banking career here. Peggy developed and supervised a large foster home program for children that was favorably recognized statewide. Her emphasis was always on the welfare of children. She maintained a District Office in Fort Gaines where she supervised child welfare programs in a number of counties.
After retiring from her life career in 1983, she helped organize the Southwest Ga. Department of Family and Children Services Retiree’s better known as “The Survivors”. She was active in it for many years.
Peggy was a member of the Fort Gaines Presbyterian Church from childhood where she faithfully served the Lord. She was very active in the Presbyterian Women organization, receiving an Honorary Life Membership.
History and Genealogy were her special interests. She was an enthusiastic and active member of the Clay/Fort Gaines Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Allen “Buck” Brown; her son Robert Lewis “Bob” Brown; her sister Sue Grimsley Cook, her parents, Robbie and Grady Grimsley and great Nephew, Jimmy Rice.
She is survived by her son James Allen Brown (wife Mila) and grandson John Bae. Also, first cousin James H. Hall and Nieces/great Nieces Cathy Cook Rice, Susie Cook Rhodes, Margot McMinn, Rebecca Wilkes, Rachael Skipper and Jenna Rhodes. Nephews and great Nephews include Morris Cook, and Matthew Rhodes. Other survivors include a host of other cousins and special dedicated friends: Amy Williams, Andy & Lena Jackson, Bill Cartledge, and all her Care Givers.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 3, 2023, in the Fort Gaines Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wade Spooner officiating and interment will follow in the New Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:00 PM until funeral time in the Walter Flint Hall of the Fort Gaines Presbyterian Church.
