Peggy Watts Darty


 


            Peggy Watts Darty, of Dothan, passed away Thursday October 27, 2011 at her home surrounded by her children, after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was 71.


 


          Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m.  Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel on West Main Street with Rev. Kyle Gatlin officiating and Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing.  Mrs. Cheryl Walker will do the eulogy.  Graveside services will be held for family members only at Spring Hill Cemetery in Carbon Hill, Alabama on Sunday.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Saturday prior to service time.


 


         In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, Alabama 36303.


 


            Mrs. Darty was born August 21, 1940 in Robertson County, Tennessee to the late Verner and Ruth Watts.  She attended Springfield High School and the University of Tennessee.  


 


     She was an award-winning author of over 30 novels, as well as numerous novellas and articles.  She worked in film, researched for CBS, and led writing workshops around the country.  She also worked in the English Department at the University of Alabama as well as at the Paul W. Bryant Museum.


 


     She attended Covenant United Methodist Church of Dothan.


 


     She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family and watching her grandsons participate in sports.  She loved the beaches and the mountains where she found inspiration for many of her books.


 


     She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Landon Darty, her parents, and a brother Jimmy Watts.


 


     She is survived by her children, Lan Darty and his wife Susan of Dothan, Steve Darty of Bozeman, Montana, and Darla Darty of Dothan; her grandsons, David Darty and Drew Darty of Dothan, and Gus Darty of Bozeman, Montana.  


 


     The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff of Covenant Hospice, as well as to Mary Freeman and Rose Magwood.
