Phyllis was born in the winter of 1943 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and raised by Oscar and Mary (Blacklock) Lantinga. After finishing high school in Grand Rapids, she later graduated from Calvin College. She then moved to Chicago where she worked for Encyclopedia Britannica. Her work sent her on many adventures, and while working on a research project in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, she gave birth to her daughter, Jennifer Daane in 1970. After travelling for a time, she settled down in Detroit, MI where she attended and graduated from Detroit College of Law, 1 of only 8 women in her graduating class. After passing the Michigan State Bar, she and her daughter moved to Alabama to live closer to family and she worked in her father’s business. She then passed the Alabama State Bar exam, and began working at Legal Services in Andalusia. (beginning in criminal defense work?). In 1980, she married David Johnson, after meeting at the First United Methodist Singles group. In the 1980’s, she started her own private law practice and began to work with and advocate for juveniles. In her 40 years of practicing law she will be most remembered for her work in juvenile and child support court, where in all cases, lives of adults and children were changed for the better. Phyllis loved and rescued many pets, and supported local charities for animal rescue and social services. She was an avid traveler near and far, including Europe, South America, Russia, and most recently Africa. She has now boldly gone to the final frontier, moving on to a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity, a wonderous place whose boundaries are that of imagination.
She is survived by her husband David Johnson of Dothan, Al her daughter Jennifer Daane Logsdon and husband Gerard of Middlebury, CT and dear friends Kathleen Nemish of Dothan, Al and Yvette Bae of Eunice, LA.
