Quinton Dossie Bruner
Quinton Dossie Bruner was born in Dothan, Alabama, on June 28, 1921, to Annie Mae Williams Bruner and Charlie Crozier Bruner. He died peacefully at his daughter’s home in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday, July 14, 2012, following a lengthy illness. A gifted student, he skipped two grades and graduated from Dothan High School in 1938, two years ahead of his class. He went to work for the Atlanta and Saint Andrews Bay Railway Company almost immediately after high school, leaving his employment there from 1942-1945 to serve in the Twentieth Air Force, Asiatic-Pacific Theater (Mariana’s Islands) during the Japanese Campaign. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Upon his discharge from the Air Force, he returned to work with the Atlanta and Saint Andrews Bay Railway from 1946-1963 in Panama City, Florida, and from 1963-1982 in Dothan, Alabama. He retired as a member of the Executive Committee of its Board of Directors and Chief Traffic Officer and Director of Strategic Planning. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Southern Freight Association from 1968-1982. He was named to “Who’s Who in the South and Southwest” in 1975 and to “Who’s Who in Rail and Rail Transit.”
Following retirement, he worked part-time in jewelry design with Bradshaw’s Manufacturing Jewelers for several years. Civic-minded and generous with his spare time, he served thirty-seven years as a member of the Kiwanis Club, thirty-five of these years as a member of the Legion of Honor. He served as president and secretary for the Kiwanis Club in Panama City, Florida, and continued as a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club in Dothan as well.
Ordained a Baptist Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Panama City, Florida, he continued to serve as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Dothan and was a member of the Sanders-Matthews Sunday School Class.
Devoted to his family, Quinton was married sixty-six years to Mary Slusher Bruner. In addition to his widow, he is survived by his three children and their spouses: Charles Steven Bruner and Sally Bruner of Newnan, Georgia; Dr. Martha Bruner Burdette and Wayne Burdette of Atlanta, Georgia; and Mary Quinn Bruner Couch and James Couch of Trezevant, Tennessee. He also had four grandsons, their spouses and one great-grandchild; Jamie and Beth Couch and their son Hudson of Jonesboro, Arkansas; Kevin and Kim Couch of Trezevant, Tennessee; Blake and Jennifer Bruner of Richmond, Virginia; and Derek and Bonnie Bruner of Nashville, Tennessee. He is also survived by his sister, Louise Bruner Barrett of Birmingham, Alabama.
Services for Mr. Bruner will be held at Byrd Funeral Home, 3409 West Main at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, with Dr. Johnny Fain officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Dothan City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in his name to the American Heart Association, The American Diabetes Association, or The First Baptist Church of Dothan.
