Raymond Earl Hamlin, known affectionately as Raymond, was a beacon of love and generosity to all who knew him. Born on April 13, 1944, in Dothan, Alabama, Raymond's life journey came full circle as he passed away peacefully in his birthplace on September 3, 2024, at the age of 80.
Raymond's early years took him to Newark, New Jersey. It was in New Jersey that Raymond's path was sweetened by his career as a head confectionist at Drake’s Bakery, a role he embraced with passion for 45 years. His dedication to his craft was only matched by the love he had for his wife, Doris, whom he met in New Jersey and with whom he shared a beautiful marriage of 45 years.
In 2012, Raymond returned to his roots in Dothan, reuniting with his family and the community he held dear. He brought back not only his expertise but also a legacy of warmth, compassion, and resilience that had been shaped by his experiences and the bonds he formed along the way.
Raymond's life was one of devotion and joy. He was the proud father of his devoted daughters, Malika Oliver Boles and her husband Chad, and Kellean Oliver, and his cherished son, Raymond Lamar Hamlin Jr. His love extended to his grandchildren, Nyesha Jett and Nyseir McDonald, who will forever remember their grandfather's kindness and support. Raymond's siblings, Denisee McCray, Delorisee McCray, and his brother Jimmy McCray, will miss his steadfast presence in their lives. While Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris, his parents Silas Hamlin and Nellar McCray, and his sister Soungia Mullins, his memory will live on through the many lives he touched.
Known for his straightforward nature, Raymond was a man who told it like it was, yet his blunt words were always delivered with the utmost kindness. He was a great provider and supportive force behind his family, embodying the qualities of a loving, generous, and selfless individual.
Raymond's interests were simple but fulfilling. He was a homebody at heart who took pleasure in life's quieter moments. He enjoyed bowling and was an active member of bowling leagues in both New Jersey and Dothan. His love for sports and movies provided him with countless hours of entertainment and conversation with friends and family. A creature of habit, Raymond could be found walking or running every day, cherishing his morning walks at 5 am as a time for peace and reflection. His enjoyment of being outdoors was a testament to his appreciation for nature and the tranquility it provided.
Raymond's legacy is one of unwavering love and kindness. His impact on the world was as profound as it was understated, and those who had the privilege of knowing him will remember his generosity and selflessness for years to come. As his family and friends bid farewell to this remarkable man, they take solace in the knowledge that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire them.
Raymond Earl Hamlin's life story is a tapestry woven with the threads of love, hard work, and an enduring commitment to family. As he is laid to rest, his memory will be cherished and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to be part of his journey. Raymond's departure leaves behind a legacy that will continue to resonate within the hearts of those he loved and the community that he considered home.
