Rebecca Ann “Becky” Calhoun Carr went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 26, 2024 while surrounded by her loving family and many life-long friends.

Becky was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December of 2022 and fought a lengthy and courageous battle for the past 21 months. She was told on many occasions by her medical team that she was an absolute rockstar during her battle.  Toughness and resolve came easy to Becky and throughout her life she was known to be a spirited and courageous champion of causes and beliefs that she held dear.

Born the daughter of Lillian Rebecca Donaldson Calhoun and Lorenzo William Calhoun in South Alabama on October 28, 1949.  Becky was the 7th of 10 siblings and growing up on the family farm she learned at an early age the values of work ethic, integrity and family-first.  Values which she carried with her throughout life.

Becky also had a competitive spirit and her well-documented hole-in-one shot on the course at Statesville Country Club was not the only highlight of her sporting days.  She was an avid and competitive tennis player for over 30 years.  Whether Captain of her team, playing casually or spectating as often as possible, she enjoyed every match. Becky would always encourage others to pick up the sport for those who didn’t already play.  Becky also greatly enjoyed food and travel.  Taking trips with life-long friends and family were especially enjoyable to Becky and she visited many countries, Ireland being her favorite.  She was equally delighted to travel to the beach with her full family any time possible.

After first meeting at MacArthur Technical Institute in Opp, Alabama, Becky married Jerry Newman Carr in 1968 while he was still attending school at The University of Alabama.  They initially lived in married student housing and welcomed their first child, Kimberly while living in Tuscaloosa.  After school they moved to Georgia, where they welcomed their second daughter, Bronwyne before settling and raising the family in North Carolina.  Whether together with family and friends on Lake Norman, dancing the Shag in North Myrtle Beach or more recently boating in Naples, Florida, Becky cherished time with Jerry, the love of her life. Becky was “a beautiful woman” to Jerry and she will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and beauty, both inside and out, to all who knew her.

While Becky loved being a wife and mother she might have loved being “Grandmother” most.  Her heart overflowed with joy as Grandmother and she loved each of her five grandchildren with all of her heart.  She was always doting over all of her grandchildren at any occasion and delighted in their successes.  They were and will always be her true joy.

Becky is survived by Jerry Newman Carr, her loving husband of 55 years; Daughters Kimberly Carr Sailors (Mark ) and Bronwyne Carr Chapman ( John); Grandchildren Taylor and Harrison Walls, Jack, Henry and Callie Chapman; Sisters, Tina Flatten (Pete), Sue Burt (Larry), Diane Wood (Howard); Brothers, Mack Calhoun (Shairlon), Macon Calhoun, Jackie Calhoun (Diane).  She is preceded in death by her parents Lillian and Lorenzo Calhoun; Sisters, Francis Kilcrease (Leon), Nell Scarborough (Ralph); Brother, Horace Calhoun (Laura).

Memorials may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at pancan.org or the Alzheimer’s Foundation at alzfdn.org.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, August 28 at James Funeral Home from 5-7 PM.

A funeral service will be held at Thursday, August 29 at Davidson U.M.C. at 11 AM with burial following at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
