ABBEVILLE. . .Retha Allen Whitehurst, a resident of Abbeville, died peacefully early Wednesday morning, September 20, 2023, at her home. She was 92.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, September 22, 2023, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Ricky Sowell officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Friday at the mortuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Hope Here International Ministries, 914 Cormack Street, Sulphur, LA 70663.
Mrs. Whitehurst, daughter of the late James Allen and Ara Brown Allen was raised in the Rocky Head community of Coffee County. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church Abbeville where she formerly served with AWANA, WMU, Vacation Bible School and the Sarah Sunday School Class. Mrs. Whitehurst was a skilled seamstress and God used that talent for world missions through her ministry with Sowing by Sewing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Whitehurst, a son, Larry Whitehurst, a great-grandson, Rhys Hammock, a sister, Beatrice Davis and two brothers, Glen Allen and Seth Allen.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Barbara Cook (Dewain), Dothan; and Anita Neal (Mark), Abbeville; three sisters, Rene Fulton, Corpus Christi, TX; Bernice Wynn, Rocky Head community; and Nell Peters, Ozark; grandchildren, Heather Pasley (Tommy), Lindsay Morrison (Ryan), Pam Hall (Jimmy) and Rebekkah Morrill; eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
