E.J. was born on May 26, 1930, to the late George Stinson and Gladys Kemp Stinson Huggins; one of three brothers, one sister and one-half sister. He joined the Army on December 5, 1947, and married Margaret Elizabeth Carter on June 10, 1953. Together they served their Country until August 1, 1975, when he retired as a Command Sergeant Major. They were married until her passing on September 29, 2010, for a total of fifty-seven years. They shared three daughters, Linda, Shirley, and Deborah.
E.J. (or Papa) as he was best known to his family, served during the Korean Conflict and in the Vietnam War. He always said when he left to join the military that he would never plow another field or pick another boll of cotton, but upon his retirement he returned to farming and raising a few cows for "fun." He enjoyed working in the yard and as all his neighbors know until the age of eighty-seven, he mowed his yard every other day and tended a small garden. He enjoyed the RFD network and all things farm-related until his passing. He also enjoyed the Day Star network and listened to it every night while going to sleep.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Stinson, his mother, Gladys Huggins, his brothers Thomas "Tom" and Jerry "Coot" Stinson and his sister Betty (Stinson) Baker.
Survivors include daughters, Linda Clemmons, Deborah Crutchfield and Shirley Branson, grandchildren: Stephen Michael Hornsby Jr. and Dr. Courtney Herring (her husband Dr. Joshua Short), great-grandchildren: Carter Jackson Short and Harper Elizabeth Short and sister Shelia Huggins Stinson.
The family extends its deepest appreciation and love to Anita Tyrues for all the love and care she provided to and shared with E. J. Stinson for the last four and a half years. No greater love is there than that given in the true spirit of Christian love and service and Anita manifested that love with her care of our father. Also, many thanks to Cathryn Jones for her caring friendship and many hours she spent visiting either by phone or in person with her "Papa" and Willie Smith who was a loyal friend and helper for too many years to count. Finally, thank you to Day Springs Hospice for your care.
