Reuben Shelley was born in the Tumbleton Community of Henry County and raised in Headland, Alabama. He lived his entire lifetime in Headland and at the age of seventeen years old, he voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve our country. Reuben was present on the USS O’Brien Battleship when the Peace Treaty to end World War II was signed on a nearby ship. After the war ended, he returned to finish high school where he was active in clubs. His favorite sport was football where he served as Captain his senior year. After graduation, he worked at Holman Funeral Home where he was mentored by Wilton and Syble Holman and the entire Holman family. He later worked in the Insurance business with Mr. Emory Solomon but soon found his passion was in the farm supply business. Supplying local farmers with fertilizers and chemicals for their crops was a job he took very seriously and one that he loved. He retired from Shelley Farm Supply after over thirty years in the business.

In 1954, Reuben married the love of his life, June Kirkland Shelley, and they recently celebrated sixty-seven years of marriage. He was proud to add two little girls to the family in the coming years. He always wanted to be involved with his children’s activities. Reuben served on countless booster clubs, fundraising events, and sponsored piano and dance recitals. He also enjoyed public service and was able to serve the people of Headland by being a City Council member and Mayor. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Headland and served as a Deacon, participated on numerous committees and fundraising campaigns. The Headland Lions Club was something he was extremely passionate about as well. He served as President numerous times and held every office at least once. He was MOST passionate about the lawn and landscaping at his home. He along with his wife, June, took pride in this on a daily basis. They worked tirelessly to keep their lawn, beds and flowers manicured to perfection.

When the time came to move to Tifton, Reuben accepted the move bravely. He quickly made friends and won the hearts of the Maple Court staff and residents. The family would like to express love and appreciation to the Maple Court staff and Abide Homecare for their attentive and compassionate care over the past year. Reuben’s last year was greatly enhanced by their tireless efforts.
