Rev. Clayton Carl Bath
The Rev. Clayton Bath of Dothan went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, March 18, 2017, following a hard-fought battle with bone cancer. He died peacefully at his home where he had been surrounded by his two children and all of his grandchildren. He was 85 years old.
Clayton was born November 27, 1931 in Laramie, Wyoming. He grew up there and in Fort Collins, Colorado. Following in his father’s profession, he studied chiropractic medicine prior to entering the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict where he served as a medic. Called into the Christian ministry, Clayton entered college. He was a graduate of Tennessee Temple College and earned his Master of Theology degree at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Clayton served most of his ministry in Mississippi, his longest tenure of 20 years as pastor of Port Gibson Baptist Church, Port Gibson, MS. Following his retirement he and his wife, Eleanor, lived for seven years in Jackson, MS prior to moving to Dothan in 2004. During his time here he served as interim pastor for a number of area churches. He and his wife were members of Bethel Baptist Church, Dothan.
Clayton was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Carl Bath; a twin brother, Dr. Clifford Bath; and an infant son, David Lee Bath.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Eleanor Jones Bath; daughter Diana Hancock (Mark) of Madison, AL; son Rev. Stephen Alan Bath (Janice) of Newport, NC; grandchildren Christopher Hancock, Matthew Hancock, Rachel Bath, David Bath (Hannah), James Clayton Bath, and Sarah Lauren Bath. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Elaine Herrin Onley (Rev. Ed Onley) and Carol Ann Jones, and a number of nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends at Ward-Wilson Funeral Home on Sunday, March 19, 2017 from 2 to 3 P.M. followed by a private family graveside service with Rev. Ricky Plummer officiating.
The family expresses special appreciation to the services of Kindred Hospice for the care given to Clayton in the home during his final days.
