Rev. M. W. ‘Monk’ Sayres
Rev. M.W. 'Monk' Sayres, of Ashford, passed away, Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Signature Healthcare in Graceville, Florida surrounded by his wife and family. He was 82.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, September 19, 2016 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Coley M. Holloway officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30-2:30 p.m. prior to service time on Monday.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Cowarts Baptist Church, 'Building Fund’, P O Box 10, Cowarts, AL, 36321.
Rev. Sayres was born June 19, 1934 in Flemington, West Virginia and lived the early years in West Virginia and Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
On April 7, 1956 he married the love of his life, Lora May Bartlett and at the age of 35, he became an ordained minister. He was bivocational pastor and a mechanic by trade. He served at numerous churches in the wiregrass area, most recently, at Pilgrims Rest East in Gordon. Rev. Sayres will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is predeceased by his parents, Odbert and Audrey Sayres, a brother, Troy Sayres, a sister, Jean Underwood and his son, Robert Aaron Sayres.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lora May Sayres of Graceville; three daughters, Kathy Whitten of Dothan, Kim Harrell (Terry Langston) of Morgan, GA; Karen Jackson (Mark) of Dothan; three grandchildren, April Lynn (Robbie), Aaron Harrell, Skyler Jackson; two great grandchildren; T. J. and Charlie Lynn; a sister-in-law, Lydia Ross; a son-in-law, Jerry Harrell and several beloved nieces and nephews.
