Reverend David Eugene Reed, 73, passed away after a brief illness at his home on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

David was born in El Dorado, Arkansas on March 20, 1948 to the late Reverend Jesse Sherman Reed and Imogene Lacy Reed. He was a member and Associate Pastor at Covenant United Methodist Church in Dothan, Alabama and was a former pastor for 17 years at both Smyrna and Shiloh United Methodist Churches in Bennettsville, SC.

After accepting the Lord as a young boy, David continually sought ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus. He loved to serve God in his Community and churches as well as on the mission field. In all aspects of his life his three goals were To know Christ, To Be Like Christ, and To Be with Christ.

While some people list educational, professional and community accomplishments, David never wanted anything to be about him. His desire was for others to know the Lord as their personal savior and if there was anything he could do to help them in this he was satisfied.

David is survived by his adoring wife of 47 years, Susan Goodwin Reed, daughter, Tammy (Steve) Morrell, son David “Chip” (Christine) Reed. Grandchildren, Ben (Kellie) Matthews, Nick Morrell, Will Morrell, Zach Brown, Jacob Reed and Alexandra Reed, Great-granddaughter Gracelynn Ruby Matthews. Brother Douglas (Janet) Reed and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Affectionately known in the community as Mr. David or “Preacher” and by his grandchildren as Pappy, David always enjoyed fellowship with others everywhere he went. He has been described by many friends as the most genuine of our Lord’s servants and will always be remembered for his sweet spirit, kind heart and soft spoken words of encouragement and love.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial contributions are made in memory of David to Ouachita Baptist University, 410 Ouachita Street, Box 3754, Arkadelphia, AR 71998-0001. These memorial gifts will be added to an endowment that has been established by the family to provide scholarship assistance to a student with a heart for ministry in evangelism and/or small churches. This fund will be called “The David, son of Jesse, Fund”. Please make checks payable to Ouachita Baptist University and include “In memory of David Reed” in the memo. Contributions can also be made online at obu.edu/give; please designate the gift “In memory of David Reed.”
