Reverend Dr. George W. Gilbert, Jr., 90, passed away quietly at his home on Thursday, May 20, 2021.
Dr. Gilbert is preceded in death by parents, George W. Gilbert, Sr, and Ida Sevelle Gilbert.
He is survived by Patricia Campbell Gilbert, his children, Greg (Suzy) Gilbert and Kyle Gilbert; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and other beloved family and friends.
Dr. Gilbert was raised in Columbia, AL and graduated from Houston County High School. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Troy State University and received his Master of Divinity Degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 1955. Dr. Gilbert received an Honorary Doctorate from Huntingdon College. His first appointment was Epworth United Methodist Church in Phenix City serving the Alabama-West Florida Conference for over 30 years. His ministerial service career culminated in Dothan serving ten years at First United Methodist Church. Along the way he served as a District Superintendent in Mobile; as a Conference Evangelist; and a delegate to Jurisdictional and General United Methodist Conferences, as well as many other voluntary roles and appointments in the United Methodist Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 1 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Dothan. The family will receive friends from 12 PM until 1 PM prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the General Scholarship Fund at Huntingdon College, 1500 East Fairview Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36106.
