DOTHAN. . .Reverend George Albert Thompson, Jr., Minister of the Gospel and a resident of Dothan, died Wednesday afternoon, March 4, 2015, at his home. He was 70.
Celebration funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, March 7, 2015, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Johnny Fain and Dr. Jerry Grandstaff officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Pea River Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Clio. The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 7:00 P.M. Friday at the mortuary in Headland.
In lieu of flowers, Rev. Thompson’s love for evangelism, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Dothan “Missions Fund”, 300 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36303.
Reverend Thompson was born and reared in Elamville, Alabama, son of the late George Albert Thompson, Sr. and Grace Ketcham Thompson. A graduate of Clio High School, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War era. Each military move provided him the opportunity to serve the Lord with new friends. During his assignment in Aviano, Italy he was instrumental in establishing a Baptist Church. After retirement from the Air Force, he received a Theology Degree from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas and began his full time ministry for the Lord. Reverend Thompson served as Pastor of Midland City Baptist Church, Hurtsboro Baptist Church, Smyrna Baptist Church, and Union Hill Baptist Church, Cottonwood. He retired in 2014 as the Director of the Judson Baptist Association in Abbeville but continued his Ministry for Jesus as his health provided. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dothan.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Barbara, Dothan; a daughter, Roxanne (David, Jr.), Clayton; a son, Greg, Panama City, Florida; a sister, Diane Robinette, (Fulton), Ariton; a brother, Henry Thompson, Texas; four grandchildren, Kayleigh (Jeffery), Alec, Taryn, and Jesse; a great-grandchild, Lane.
