The Rev. Harry Alfred Stewart, 84, was called home to Heaven by his Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 24 at his home in Dothan. He was a loving husband and father to his wife and two sons and the proud grandpa of two beautiful granddaughters.
A family graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in Birmingham, AL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dothan District of the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church, 256 Honeysuckle Road, Suite 5, Dothan, AL, 36305.
He was born and reared in Birmingham, AL. The son of the late Fred and Marie Stewart. He graduated from Howard College, now Samford University, in Birmingham in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science. He earned his Master's Degree in Divinity from Southern Seminary, in Louisville, Kentucky in 1962. He served Southern Baptist churches in South Georgia and Alabama for almost 30 years. He then pastored United Methodist churches in the Dothan District of the Alabama-West Florida Conference for more than 25 years. He preached his last sermon, after 67 years of pastoring, on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church near Columbia, AL.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Doris; Two sons, Michael (Cynthia) Stewart, Hazelhurst, GA; Mark (Julie) Stewart, Dothan, AL; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Hannah Stewart, both of Dothan, AL; two sisters, Jane (Dale) Brown, Hephzibah, GA, and Amy (Lee) Sanner, Gadsden, AL; and a host of nieces and nephews.
