Reverend Wallace W. Russell, a resident of Dothan, died Monday, April 11, 2016 at Noland Hospital. He was 84.
Funeral services for Reverend Russell will be held at 11 AM Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Ricky Plummer officiating. Burial will follow in Crestlawn Memorial cemetery with Southern Heritage directing. The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to; Bethel Baptist Church Missions, 3301 E. Cottonwood Road, Dothan, AL 36301.
Reverend Russell was born February 27, 1932 in Ensley, Alabama to the late Wallace Wales and Jeannetta Whitlow Russell, Sr. He was a 1950 graduate of Ashville High School and graduated from the Baptist College of Florida formerly Baptist Bible Institute (BBI) in 1970. Reverend Russell began as interim pastor of Pleasant Valley Church in Attalla, after being ordained to the Gospel ministry by Steele Baptist Church, Steele. His 42 years of ministry included pastoring the following churches; Pleasant Plains Baptist, Clayton, Pleasant Grove Baptist, Ozark and Carrollton Baptist, Carrollton. In April 11, 1982 he began his final pastorate at Bethel Baptist in Dothan, where he served for 25 years, retiring April 29, 2007. Reverend Russell is regarded as a Godly mentor for young pastors and laymen throughout Alabama. Under his leadership, countless people called into the ministry have been mentored in God’s word and sent out for full service or to further their education in order to serve.
Reverend Russell is preceded in death by his parents, son, Ed Russell and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Loretta Russell, Dothan; three daughters, Judy Brooks, Sylacauga, Sally and her husband, Gene Latham, Northport, Barbara and her husband, David Flatt, Panama City, Florida; grandchildren, Scott and Sabrina Knight, Nicole Hassebrock, Matt and Brooke Latham, Brooke Flatt; great grandchildren, Addison and Justis Knight, Ashleigh Latham, Caleb and Hannah Hassebrock; sister Pat and her husband, Joe Wright, Dayton, Ohio.
