ABBEVILLE… Richard Douglas “Doug” Messick, a resident of Abbeville, died early Friday afternoon, December 28, 2018. He was 87.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, December 30, 2018, in the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with Reverends Ryan Johnson, Alan Capps, and Mark Messick officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. Holman Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 P.M. Sunday in the First Baptist Church Family Life Building.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Abbeville, P.O. Box 606, Abbeville, AL 36310 or to the Abbeville Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 7, Abbeville, Al 36310.
Mr. Messick was born in Andalusia, AL in 1931 and lived most of his lifetime in Abbeville. He graduated from Abbeville High School with honors in 1949 and received a B.S. in Mathematics and Science from Troy State University. He later received a Masters in Vocational Education in 1968 from the University of Alabama. He retired as a Vocational Educator from Abbeville High School, where in earlier years he taught Mathematics. For all of his adult life, he was engaged in farming. He was a member and past president of the Abbeville Kiwanis Club, active as a sports booster, served as Treasurer of the Abbeville Quarterback Club, served as the clock operator for the Abbeville High School basketball team, and also operated the visitors concession stand for many years at home football games. Mr. Messick was also an active member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.
For many years he authored the “Country Corner” in the Abbeville Herald, published two books, and enjoyed writing poetry and telling tales.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Sarah Alice Murphy Messick; a brother, Jack Messick; a sister- in-law and brother-in-law, Jane and Bob Kirby.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Sarah Messick “DeeDee” Champion (J.P.), Abbeville; two grandchildren, Rusty Champion (Sarah), and Parker Champion (Abby); two sisters, Lucy Heller (George) of Park Ridge, NJ, and Jane Murphy (Mack) Abbeville; two brothers, Wiley Messick (Betty), Atlanta, and O’Neal Messick (Mary Hazel), Bay Minette, AL; a brother-in-law, George Murphy (Jane), Abbeville.
Family would like to say a special thank you to the caregivers that provided such great care for “Pa”, Pam Danzey, Thelda Hughes and Dana Nielsen.
