Richard Neilson

Richard Lee Neilson, a cherished pillar of his family and community, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024, at a hospital in Montgomery, Alabama. Born on May 30, 1947, in Alabama to James and Ruby Neilson, Richard grew into a man of courage, love, and kindness, living a life that touched many hearts and inspired respect and admiration.

Richard, known affectionately to friends and family as simply Richard, spent his formative years in Alabama, where he developed a strong sense of duty and service that would become the hallmark of his life. After a distinguished career in the military, where he served his country with honor and valor, Richard retired and brought the same dedication and commitment to his civilian life. His unwavering devotion to his family, his faith, and his community became the cornerstones upon which he built his legacy.

As a loving father, Richard is survived by his two sons, Keith Neilson and Mark Lee Neilson. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and provided a strong role model for them to emulate. His grandchildren Daniel, Abigail, Shayla, and Shana brought him immeasurable joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Richard also found comfort and love in the memories of his late wife, Mary Nell Neilson, whose presence remained a guiding light in his life.

Richard was the beloved brother of Dan Neilson and predeceased by his brother Jim Neilson. Though his parents, James and Ruby, and his grandchild Brett Neilson have departed before him, the strength and love of the family continue to reflect the values he instilled in them.

Throughout his life, Richard was deeply involved in his local churches, contributing his time and energy to Cornerstone Bible Church and later becoming a member of Pathway Baptist Church. His faith was a source of strength and solace, and he lived his beliefs through acts of kindness, charity, and community service.

Those who knew Richard appreciated his penchant for keeping busy with projects around the house. His hands were rarely still as he found joy in the simple pleasures of fixing, building, and improving his home, creating a warm and welcoming space for all who entered.

Richard's character was exemplified by his courage, a trait that was evident not only in his military service but also in his everyday interactions. His loving nature made him a friend to many, and his kindness left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to cross his path. These attributes were the bedrock of his existence and will remain as a testament to the life he led.
