MIDLAND CITY. . .Riley Harold Barnes, a resident of Midland City, died Tuesday night, October 25, 2022, in a Dothan hospital. He was 89.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 29, 2022, in the Cedar Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Benny Cole and Pastor Randy Kuhn officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Cedar Grove Baptist Church, 2797 County Road 14, Midland City, AL 36350.
Mr. Barnes was born and reared in Covington County, Alabama, son of the late Calvin Barnes and Ida Mae Sasser Barnes. At the age of eighteen, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served his country during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of Technical Sergeant in 1972 after twenty years of service. After retirement from the military, Mr. Barnes attended Wallace Community College and was employed by Landmark Park. At age 42, he became a Christian and served the Cedar Grove Baptist Church as a Deacon, Sunday School Director, Church Training Director, and Sunday School Teacher for forty-seven years. He was an avid gardener and loved to watch the fruits of his labor grow. Mr. Barnes loved animals and is survived by his canine companions “Petie and Sam”. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Carnley Barnes, sisters, Kay Hall, Wannell Barnes and brothers, Carlton Barnes, Troy Barnes and Roland Barnes.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Donna Barnes Morin (Michael), Phenix City, AL; a son, Harold Jeffrey Barnes (Amy), Midland City; a brother, E. C. Barnes, Samson; a brother-in-law, Donald Carnley, Midland City; grandchildren, Carrie McKnight, Andy Smith (Hope), Shanda Stallard (Dustin), Rachael Beasley (Brad), Lee Barnes and Jade Barnes; great-grandchildren, Shaelee McKnight, Carter McKnight, Caroline Beasley, Damon Smith, Riley Smith, Gage Norwalk, Riley Elmore, Conner Stallard, Hannah Stallard and Preston Stallard.
