Robert Howard “Bobby” Hughes of Elba (Ino community) passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024, surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was 87.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Enterprise, AL with Minister Greg Hanchey officiating. Burial will follow in the Asbury Cemetery (Coffee County, AL) with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Enterprise on Wednesday, beginning at 1:00 p.m. and continuing until service time.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Cemetery Fund or Asbury Cemetery Fund.
Mr. Hughes was born in Oxford, AL on October 19, 1936, to the late Edward Bailey and Lillie Thurman Hughes. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Mr. Bobby had a distinguished career with Chevron Oil Co. as a supervisor and consultant for over 40 years. He was instrumental while traveling overseas to build and oversee the establishment of new oil refineries. After his retirement, he stayed busy in his shop woodworking and enjoying his farm. Mr. Bobby was a faithful member of Liberty Church of Christ and attended as long as his health permitted. He proudly served in the Alabama National Guard for 8 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Jackie Hughes.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sara Thames Hughes; son, Ricky Hughes (Kim), all of Elba (Ino community), daughter, Phyllis Griswold (Reggie) of New Brockton, AL; grandchildren, Kenny Hughes (Tara) of Ino, AL, Brandon Griswold of Dallas, GA, Justin Griswold (Rachel) of Altus, OK, Ashton Hughes of Ino, AL, Cayla Hughes Register (TJ) of Opp, AL, Darren Holden (Kirstin) of Monroe, GA and Jack Hughes of Charleston, SC; seven great grandchildren and one on the way; and sister, Brenda Conroy of Winter Haven, FL.
Serving as pallbearers will be Kenny Hughes, Ashton Hughes, Brandon Griswold, Justin Griswold, Clay Garner, and TJ Register.
The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to Gentiva Hospice for their devoted care for our loved one during his illness.
