ABBEVILLE. . .Robert Joseph “Bobby Joe” Espy, a resident of Abbeville, passed away early Sunday morning, March 12, 2023, at his home. He was 77.


A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, March 15, 2023, in the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with Reverend Ricky Sowell officiating. Burial will be in the Abbeville Pioneer Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 P.M. Wednesday in the Family Life Building of the church.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Abbeville, P.O. Box 606, Abbeville, AL 36310.


Bobby Joe was a lifelong resident of Abbeville. He was a 1964 graduate of Abbeville High School and attended Wallace Community College where he received an Associates Degree in Nursing. He served his country in the Army National Guard in the Abbeville unit. Bobby Joe retired from the Alabama Department of Public Health as a Registered Nurse. In earlier years, he was employed by the Henry County Hospital, Medical Center Barbour and the Clay County Hospital in Ft. Gaines. Bobby Joe was currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Henry County Soil & Water Conservation District. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville where he served as a Deacon and also as a teacher of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class. Bobby Joe was preceded in death by his father, Robert Joshua Espy, his mother, Hattie Strickland Culpepper Espy, sisters, Sarah Fields, Emily Jones, Mary Lucy Mobley and Nan Brannon, and his brothers, Harry Espy, Hubert Culpepper, Everett Culpepper, Tom Ben Culpepper, Joe Culpepper and Herman Culpepper.


Surviving relatives include his wife, Martha Herring Espy, a son, Craig Espy (Amber), a daughter, Katie Espy Dalton (Rodney), all of Abbeville; three grandchildren, M. Katherine Dalton, Joshua Espy and Mason Espy, numerous beloved nieces and nephews.


Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class,  Tom Shelley, Pete Shelley, Todd Ward, Darden Kirby, Larry Pitchford, Lee Fortson and Joel Kennedy.
