Robert Lamar Powell
Robert L. Powell, age 86 a lifelong resident of Dothan died Saturday night March 2, 2019 at his
home after an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday March 8, 2019 in the First United Methodist Church of Dothan with the Reverend Doctor James B. Sanders III, officiating and Family First Funeral & Cremation Care directing. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery. Asked to serve as honorary pallbearers will be the Pathfinders Sunday School Class of First United Methodist
Church and the United Methodist Men. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 P.M.
until service time in the church sanctuary. The family ask that memorial contributions be made to the United Methodist Men, 1380 W. Main Street Dothan, AL 36301.
Mr. Powell was born in Houston County son of the late Jesse M. Powell and Eva Weathers
Powell. Robert was the former owner and operator of 4 Simple Simon Automobile Parts Stores
located in Dothan, Enterprise and Bainbridge, Ga., but Mr. Powell’s true love and passion was
the United Methodist Church. At the age of 11 he joined Lafayette Street Methodist Church
and in 1989 became a member of First United Methodist Church in Dothan. He had served with
the United Methodist Children’s Home as an accomplished fund raiser and served as President
of the National United Methodist Men for 10 years. Robert was instrumental in starting the
Pastor’s Appreciation Banquet which host pastors and their spouses serving in the Alabama-
West Florida United Methodist Conference and is held annually at First United Methodist
Church in Dothan.
Other than his parents he was preceded in death by a son Robert “Bob” Lamar Powell, 2
brothers J.M. Powell, Phillip Powell and his sister Patsy Powell.
Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years Elene “Lene” Patterson Powell and his son Charlie
Powell both of Dothan, his daughter-in-law Sallie Powell of Tallahassee, FL, 5 grandchildren and
7 great grandchildren.
