SHORTERVILLE. . .Robert Lee Fortson, a resident of Shorterville, died Friday afternoon, April 26, 2024, in a Dothan hospital. He was 91.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, April 28, 2024, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Tim McCraney officiating. Burial will follow in the Shorterville Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary in Abbeville.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Safe Haven Animal Rescue Kennels (S.H.A.R.K.), P.O. Box 126, Abbeville, AL 36310 or to the American Heart Association, 1449 Medical Park Drive, South, Birmingham, AL 35213.


            Mr. Fortson was born and reared in Shorterville, son of the late John Gaines Fortson and Mattie White Fortson. He was a graduate of Abbeville High School. Mr. Fortson served his country in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Shorterville Baptist Church where he formerly served as a Deacon. In later years, Mr. Fortson attended Fellowship Baptist Church. He retired in 1998 from the Shorterville Post Office as Postmaster. Mr. Fortson was preceded in death by a sister, Willa Maude Moody, a brother, Raymond Fortson, a niece, Kay Moody Booth, a brother-in-law, Harold Land, and a great-nephew, Jay Nolan.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Martha Sue Land Fortson; a son, Lee Fortson (Dena), and a granddaughter, Evie Fortson, all of Shorterville; a sister-in-law, Sarah Wilkins, Dothan; a nephew, John Moody (Cheryl), a great-nephew, John Scott (Pam),  two great-great-nephews and an aunt, Catherine White.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be John Moody, John Scott, Jeff Money, Jerry Howard, Chris Daughtry and Duane Hines. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Bo King, Charles Emmett Berry, Pee Wee Blankenship, Thomas Kennedy and Tommy Searcy.
