Robert Milton “Buddy” Holmes
Robert Milton “Buddy” Holmes, a resident of Dothan, passed away Friday, June 29, 2012 at Flowers Hospital. He was 87.
Graveside services will be held 9:00 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2012 at Memory Hill Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Dothan, with the Rev. Robert C. Oates and the Rev. Robert E. Baxter officiating and Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Born in 1925 in Birmingham, Robert attended Woodlawn High School before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps and serving as an instructor pilot during WWII. A 1950 graduate of the Auburn University School of Architecture, he practiced architecture in Birmingham until 1960, when he and his wife Jeannette moved their family to Dothan. Robert practiced in Dothan for over 30 years, and was a founding partner in Waid, Holmes & Associates Architects and later Holmes & Green Architects. Design projects included the Dothan Civic Center, First Presbyterian Church and Troy State – Dothan Campus. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the American Institute of Architects, and various civic organizations. A devoted husband and father, he loved water sports, building projects, and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannette E. Holmes of Dothan; sons, Robert M. “Buster” Holmes, Jr., (Gina), of Yucaipa, CA, Michael D. Holmes, of Dothan, and Thaddeus B. “Thad” Holmes, (Donna), of Spanish Fort, AL; daughter, Laura H. Hambaugh, (Robert), of Dothan; four grandchildren, Hilary Elizabeth Fletcher, of San Diego, CA, Colton Holmes, of Spanish Fort, and Jonah and Lucie Hambaugh, of Dothan.
