HEADLAND…. Roberta Whiddon Childs of Headland, Alabama passed away on Wednesday morning, August 28, 2024, at a Dothan hospital. She was 79.
Graveside funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, located on AL Hwy 134, in Headland. The family will receive friends following the service. Wright Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
The family requests no flowers or food. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2506 SR-134 Headland, Alabama 36345 or the Blanche Solomon Memorial Library History Room, 17 Park Street, Headland, Alabama 36345, in memory of Mrs. Childs.
Mrs. Childs was born January 31, 1945, to the late James Grant Whiddon and Bernice Griffin Whiddon, of Newville, Alabama. She graduated from Newville High School in 1963, and attended Troy State College, graduating in 1966. Mrs. Childs received her Master of Education, Master of Administration and Supervision from the University of West Alabama, and she did post graduate work at the University of Montevallo. Mrs. Childs retired as principal of J.E. Terry Elementary School, Plantersville, Alabama, in 1996, after being employed by the State of Alabama Department of Education for 30 years.
Mrs. Childs moved back to Henry County in 2000. She was a lifetime member and service as secretary and treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Henry County Historical Group until 2011. She served on the Henry County Senior RX Board. She served on the Henry County Board of Equalization. She served as treasurer of the Newville Baptist Church until 2013. In 2008, she published a book, The Coin, A History of Newville, Alabama and the Newville Baptist Church. Mrs. Childs served as a member and as chairman of the Blanch Solomon Memorial Library Board of Trustees. She was an avid supporter of the library’s history room. She was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church and served as Church Clerk. Mrs. Childs was in the antique business, Bertie’s Nest, until 2012. In 2012, she opened the Kitchen Wizard in the Old Icehouse in Headland, Alabama.
Mrs. Childs loved traveling, fishing, reading, writing, researching family history, and most of all her church, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Wiley David Brackin, Coleman Ronald Davis and Warren H. Childs.
She is survived by her daughter, Leslie Blondell, and her son, John Grant Davis (Nikki), her three grandsons, Brandon Blondell (Casey), Christopher Blondell (Tanya), Ethan Grant Davis (Alex), and seven great-grandchildren, Jaycee, Ryland, Christopher, Jr., Zackary, Torston, Anders Blondell, and Forrest Davis.
