NEWVILLE…Roger Luther Ammons, a resident of Newville, passed away Monday evening, May 10, 2021, in a Dothan hospital. He was 89.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 13, 2021, in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery with Brother Benny Cole and Reverend Hugh D. Kirkland, Jr. officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Thursday in the church sanctuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Carolyn Riley, 1300 County Road 105, Newville, AL 36353.
Mr. Ammons was born in Henry County, near Headland, son of the late John Thomas Ammons and Nettie Newsome Ammons. He lived in the Mt. Pisgah Community, near Echo, most of his adult lifetime. Mr. Ammons served his county in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and also served in the Army National Guard in the Headland Unit. After thirty years of employment, he retired as a Truck Driver from Rebwood Furniture Manufacturing Company. Mr. Ammons was a member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Secretary, Trustee and was a member of the Cemetery Committee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Lee Ammons, his son, Jeffery Roger Ammons, his grandson, Brandon Wilson, and three brothers, Ovie Lee Ammons, Frank J. Ammons and Kenneth Ammons.
Surviving relatives include his three daughters, Kelly Focht (Sam), Auburn; Patty Knight (Bill), Headland; and Wanda Messer, Abbeville; a sister, Jane Potts, Headland; a brother, Emmett Ammons (Betty), Midland City; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; special friends, Emelie & Roger Woodham.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Sam Focht, Bill Knight, Chris Grammer, Shawn Scott, Donnie Wells and Barry Singletary.
