Roy Gene Hughes passed away Monday evening, February 15th at his home with family by his side. He was 80 years old.
He was born September 18, 1935 in Geneva Co. AL to the late James Leroy and Bonnie Hollis Hughes. He enlisted in the United States Army and served proudly for 23 years. After retiring from the military he worked in the maintenance field at both Hartford Health Care and Hartford Retirement Village for several years. He also served on the Board of Directors at Hartford Retirement Village. He was a charter member of New Canaan Ministries in Hartford, AL. He was actively involved in the church and served as music director. Aside from work and church, he enjoyed gardening and trailriding with his children and grandchildren.
Services will be at New Canaan Ministries in Hartford, AL. Wednesday, February 17th at 11:00 a.m. with Peggy Stewart and Desiree Williams officiating. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Hartford City Cemetery with Bottoms Garden Chapel directing.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stephanie Ann Hughes. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Elfriede Popp Hughes, Black, AL. He had 5 children, Debra Hughes, Jasper, FL; Donna (Donnie) Henley, Newberry, FL; Roy Lane Hughes, Arizona; Gene (Teresa) Hughes and Dennis (Lisa) Hughes, Black, AL. Eight Grandchildren, Mark Henley, New York, NY; Lindsay Henley, NC; Jennifer Hughes, Hawaii; Jared Alexander; Kevin Hughes, AL; Shannon (Lance) Phillips, Enterprise, AL; Emily (Turner) Shelley, Geneva, AL; Heather Hughes, NC; and Tyler Hughes, Black, AL. Five great-grandchildren. A very special granddaughter Stephanie Phillips (his partner in crime) Jaxon Phillips, Ryker Shelley, Zuri and Aang Hughes. His Brother James (Binnie) Hughes, Molina FL; A special aunt Fay Shields and Uncle J.C. Hughes. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Pallbearers will be military. Honorary pallbearers will be board members of New Canaan.
Flowers will be omitted. Donations can be made to New Canaan. Gentiva Hospice. St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Gentiva Hospice, Jessica, Mary, Kim and many others.
