Roy Ivan Baker, Jr., known to all as Sonny, passed away peacefully in his home on July 7, 2023, in Dothan, Alabama after a long and brave battle with an extended illness. He was born on July 22, 1939, in Meredian, Mississippi to Roy and Allie Lee Baker. Sonny was a beloved son, husband, father, papa, brother, and uncle. He was a kind and selfless man, known for his generous spirit.
Sonny leaves behind a loving family, including his wife of 59 years, Betty Jean Baker. He was a devoted father to his daughters, Jeri Roshenne (Larry) Weaver, Diania "Darlene" (Tomas) Perez, and Rebecca Whitney (Todd) Calhoon, and a cherished papa to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sisters, Ruth Bailey and Mabrey Castle, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Doris Tisdale and Laverne Moake, and his parents, Roy and Allie Lee Baker.
Sonny along with his family would move to Dothan in 1976 where he held a position as a manager with Dothan Gulf Coast Truck and Equipment "Mack Trucks" for 44 years. His work ethic was unparalleled and he was highly respected by his colleagues. His commitment to his work was only surpassed by his commitment to his community and his dedication to service. He was a Volunteer Fire Fighter in Chickasaw, Alabama. He was a proud Freemason and Eastern Star for over 50 years, and a Shriner for 25 years, contributing to his community in numerous ways.
A man of many interests, Sonny loved the great outdoors. Hunting in Monroeville and Millery was a favorite pastime, as was fishing at Lake Eufaula. He also coached softball, imparting not only his knowledge of the game but also his love for teamwork and fair play. Sonny enjoyed riding horses every chance he got. A passionate Alabama fan, Sonny never missed a game and his infectious enthusiasm made every game an event.
In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." Roy lived by these words daily, and his life was a testament to this philosophy. He was a man who put others before himself and dedicated his life to serving his family, his community, and his work.
Private services were held at 10 am on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Goldsmith officiating. Sonny was laid to rest at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Roy Ivan Baker, Jr.'s life was a beacon of service, selflessness, and love. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will be cherished forever by his family, friends, and community.
