Ruby Elaine Mize Garrett of Dothan, Alabama passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at her residence. She was 74.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 11 am at Westwood Presbyterian Church with Pastor David Temples officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the church from 9-11 am on the day of the service.
Ruby was born September 7, 1942, in Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia and lived in that area through high school. Mrs. Garrett was the daughter of the late Lewis Howell Mize and mother, Ruby Irene McWilliams Mize of Conyers, Rockdale County, Georgia. She graduated from Southwest DeKalb High School, Decatur, Georgia in 1960. She married Staff Sergeant Donald E. Garrett, USAF, on February 10, 1961 at Glad Tidings Church of God, Decatur, Georgia. Donald and Ruby were blessed with 56 years of marriage, during which time they lived in various places including: Hunter AFB, Savannah, Georgia; Loring AFB, Limestone, Maine; Chanute AFB, Rantoul, Illinois; Vandenberg AFB, Lompoc, California (where both their children, Lisa and Kevin were born); Travis AFB, Fairfield, California; Kadena AFB, Okinawa, Japan, then back to southwest Georgia – Sycamore and Albany, Georgia. They moved to Dothan, AL in 2008. Elaine retired from the U.S. Postal Service after over thirty years of service. She was a member of Mission Hills Baptist Church of Lompoc, California.
Mrs. Garrett is survived by one daughter, Lisa Elaine Garrett (Scott) Bonnell of Tallahassee, Florida; one son, Kevin Donald (Denise) Garrett of Lawrenceville, GA; four grandchildren, Jacob Scott Bonnell of Orlando, FL, Ethan Garrett (Taylor) Bonnell of Kissimmee, FL, Chloe Elaine Bonnell of Tallahassee, FL, and Lucas Oliveira Garrett of Arlington, VA, her mother, Ruby Irene McWilliams, and two brothers, Lewis Wayne (Chris) Mize and Robert Kenneth (Marla) Mize all of Conyers, GA.
