Russell Donald Mayo, 68, of Enterprise, AL, lost his battle with lung cancer at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery and went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 2, 2015, surrounded by family and friends.


Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 8, 2015, at Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory in Enterprise, AL with Rev. John Taylor officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday beginning at 1:00 PM and continuing until service time.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Boll Weevil Shrine Club, Children’s Transportation, P.O. Box 310381, Enterprise, AL 36331.


Donnie was born on April 22, 1947 in Grayson, KY, to the late Elihue and Alma Mayo.  He was a graduate of Ashville High School in Ashville, AL.  Donnie served in the U. S. Army before being medically discharged due to injuries received while serving in the Vietnam War.  After military service, Donnie built residential homes in Trussville, then commercial and residential construction in Fort Walton-Destin, FL, Enterprise, AL and Houston, TX.  After returning to Alabama, he established Mayo Core Company in Enterprise.


In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his infant daughter, Sonya D. Mayo and a brother, Harold Mayo.


Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Henrietta Perkins Mayo; 2 sons, Russell Mayo Jr. (Kelli) of Enterprise and Kenneth P. Mayo of Enterprise; 2 daughters, Sondra Y. Boutwell (Dennis) of Coffee Springs and Cynthia R. Hataway (Tommy) of Elba; 7 grandchildren, Robynn Mayo, Seth Mayo, Logan Mayo and Lori Grace Mayo, all of Enterprise, Ashley Hines of Coffee Springs and Kallie Hataway and Destiny Hataway of Elba.  He is survived by 3 brothers, Daniel Mayo (Christine) of Huffman, TX, Kenneth Mayo (Esther) of Baytown, TX and Gregory Mayo (Marilyn) of Ashland, KY; 3 sisters, Sharon Lindley of Enterprise, Shelia Reeves (Grady) of Enterprise and Jan Woodruff (Rod) of Hanceville, AL; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
