Russell Joe Whiddon, of Derby, Kansas, a native of Newville, died Thursday, September 10, 2015, at his home. He was 67.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 19, 2015, in the Union Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, near Abbeville, with Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Saturday in the sanctuary of the Union Free Will Baptist Church. Holman Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Union Free Will Baptist Church, c/o Carol Johns, 206 Briarhill Road, Abbeville, AL 36310.
Mr. Whiddon was born and reared in Newville, son of the late Marvette Louis (Gret) Whiddon and Rose Colle Whiddon. He was a 1966 graduate of Newville High School and attended Troy University. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Mr. Whiddon was a member of Pleasantview Baptist Church in Derby. He retired in 2005 from The Boeing Company in Wichita, Kansas as a Manufacturing Engineer. Mr. Whiddon formerly lived in Abbeville, Pensacola, FL and Greenville, MS before moving to Derby in 1989. He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Whiddon.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Cathy Bodiford Whiddon; a daughter, Carri Whiddon Robison (Bob), a son, Dr. Jim Whiddon (Cyndra), all of Andover, KS; a sister, Jill Capan; seven grandchildren, Connor Guthridge, Dylan Whiddon, Megan Whiddon, Emma Whiddon, Blake Robison, Bret Robison, and Braden Robison; a sister-in-law, Carol Bodiford White (Bill), a niece, Charla Smith (Benny), and a nephew, Chris Whiddon (Megan).
Serving as active pallbearers will be Benny D. Smith, Billy D. Smith, Chase W. Smith, Don Cleveland, Robb Cleveland, and Tommy McCoy.
