Ruth Elizabeth LaPointe Milner, 93, a long-time resident of Dothan, Alabama, passed away peacefully with family by her side at Flowers Hospital on February 21st, 2018. Ruth was the loving wife of the late Cecil J. Milner. She was a member of Saint Columba Catholic Church.
Ruth was the proud and devout mother of Patricia Milner Chevez, of Roseville, California; Michael Milner of Dothan, Alabama; William (Linda) Milner of Greenville, Rhode Island; Timothy (Carol) Milner of Boulder, Colorado; and Jonathan Milner. Ruth will also forever be lovingly remembered as Nana to her 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and as Auntie Ruthie or Aunt Ruth to many nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Conrad Chevez and her grandson, Matthew Milner. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Cecille LaPointe and her brother-in-law, George Milner.
A World War II Veteran serving 5 years in the United States Marine Corps, Ruth marched in President Truman's 1949 inaugural parade. A USMC Recruiter, she was honorably discharged in 1950 with a held rank of Staff Sergeant.
After her marriage to Cecil in 1949, Ruth began her college studies at Colorado (A&M) State University in Fort Collins, but her studies were interrupted when Cecil was recalled into the Marine Corps. After a short time in Quantico, Virginia, they spent their next 25 years in Irving, Texas and Western Springs, Illinois where Ruth made a loving home for their five children. In 1977, Ruth and Cecil relocated to Dothan, Alabama.
Ruth made the decision to resume her educational journey, receiving her BS and her MBA at Troy University. Ruth relished her 20 years of service as a teacher and volunteer, teaching for the Head Start Program in Dothan where she was known for her kindness and passion for young children. Proud of Ruth's accomplishments, Cecil initiated The Ruth Elizabeth LaPointe Milner Scholarship at Troy University, Dothan Campus to assist a mother, housewife, or widow seeking to achieve a degree in business.
A memorial mass for Ruth will be held in her hometown of Abington, Massachusetts.
