WEBB. . .Ruth Mills Kirkland, a resident of Webb, Alabama, died Monday, April 22, 2019, at her home surrounded by her family. She was 85.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Thursday, April 25, 2019, in the Webb Baptist Church with Dr. Greg Belser and Reverend Joel Laseter officiating. Graveside services will follow in the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Ray Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 P.M. Thursday in the Webb Baptist Church sanctuary. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Webb Baptist Church “Music Fund”, P.O. Box 70, Webb, AL 36376, or to the Ridgecrest Baptist Church “Music Fund”, 1231 Fortner Street, Dothan, AL 36301.
Mrs. Ruth Kirkland was born and reared in Houston County, near Ashford, daughter of the late James Wilburn Mills and Eunice Jones Mills. She lived in Chipley, Florida, Ft. Walton Beach, Florida and Decatur, Georgia and moved from Dothan to Webb in 1975. Miss Ruth and her late husband formerly owned and operated Ken’s Food Stores in Dothan. In earlier years, she was employed by Wesley Manor Retirement Center.
Miss Ruth was a member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church and was a former member of the Webb Baptist Church where she served in various capacities to include choir member, Sunday School teacher, coordinating the family night supper and serving on other church committees. She was a member of the Ladies Ensemble “Real Joy” which was a special ministry to Miss Ruth as they travelled to various churches and other events to share their testimony in song. She had a servant’s heart and felt called to use her unique gift of hospitality to bless her family, church, friends and community to further His Kingdom. Miss Ruth was a Prayer Warrior and in later years, she started a card ministry to encourage others. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-seven years, Kenneth Kirkland, two sisters, Pauline Mills and Bonnie Rowland and two brothers, Virgil Mills and J W. Mills.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Deborah Heard (Don), Headland, and Kaye Kirkland, Webb; two sons, Doug Kirkland (Linda), Headland, and Stan Kirkland, Dothan; three grandchildren, Amy Cummings (Michael), Kylie Mendoza (Rigo), and Josh Kirkland (Courtney); nine great-grandchildren, Gabe, Caleb, Libby, Holly, Eli, Ean, Noah, Jonah and Sarah; two great-great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Oliver; sisters-in-law, Ann Mills and Sylvia Kirkland Yohe; brother-in-law, Russell Kirkland (Betty).
Serving as active pallbearers will be Joe May, Jackie May, Larry Phillips, Luke Hinson, Ronald Devane, Ray Cobb and Bill Thomas. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Real Joy Ladies Ensemble.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Encompass Hospice, especially to Cindy and Mandy. And also a very special thank you to Mary, for the loving kindness shown to Miss Ruth.
