Mrs. Mashburn was born March 8, 1934 in Marianna, Florida, daughter of the late Grady Sims and Nellie Russ Sims. She was reared in Malone, Florida where she graduated from high school. She met her soul mate, “Bill” after graduating and began her married life in Marianna. In 1961, they relocated in Dothan. Ruth was a stay at home mom until a couple of years after the birth of her youngest son. She started her career at J. C. Penney where she retired after twenty-nine years as fine jewelry manager. After retirement, they built their dream home and helped keep their first great-grandson on a daily basis until November 2007. Bill and Ruth shared a wonderful fifty-two years of marriage until Bill’s passing in November 2009. In November 2009, she moved to Headland where she had exceptionally caring neighbors. In their earlier years, she and “Bill” were members of Calvary Baptist Church, Dothan, where she was a member of the Adult Choir and directed the Children’s Choir. They later moved to Cloverdale Baptist Church where they were active members in the Adult Choir and she was a member of the Lydia Sunday School Class. Ruth had a beautiful voice and sang many solos for the Easter and Christmas cantatas. For a number of years, Ruth was a volunteer at the Columbia Baptist Association “The Store”. Due to health issues over the last two years, she resided in Somerset Assisted Living and Extendicare. Ruth was passionate about her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was overcome with joy and had a huge smile every time she saw pictures or received visits by her great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, William Gerald “Bill” Mashburn, Sr, a sister, Doris Myers, and two brothers, Fred Sims and Hiram Grady Sims, Jr.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Valerie Mashburn Shelton (Kenneth), Headland; two sons, William Gerald (Jerry) Mashburn, Jr., Taylor, AL; and M. Van Mashburn (Crissie), Dothan; six grandchildren, Abby Shelton Saunders (John Ralph), Nick Nowell (Lindsay), Chase Mashburn (Rachel), Sarah Shelton Davis (Jarrod), Brett Mashburn (Amanda), and Cole Mashburn (Chelsea); eight great-grandchildren, Peyton Saunders, John Lewis Saunders, Carter Mashburn, Kaigen LaGoy, Treylynn LaGoy, Lucas Nowell, Jackson Nowell and Ansley Grace Nowell; and special nieces, Carolyn and Emily Dent.
Serving as active pallbearers will be John Ralph Saunders, John Lewis Saunders, Jarrod Davis, Nick Nowell, Chase Mashburn, Cole Mashburn and Brett Mashburn.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Extendicare for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Mashburn during her stay.
