MALVERN. . .Sam Ross Peebles, a resident of Malvern, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday, March 28, 2019, in a Dothan hospital. He was 92.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, March 31, 2019, in the Clopton United Methodist Church with Chaplain (Colonel), Retired Sonny Moore, Dr. Paola Bass, Reverend Scott Moffitt and Reverend Kevin Knight officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends following the funeral in the Clopton Community House.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Clopton Cemetery Fund, in c/o Vivia Peebles, 101 Park Drive, Abbeville, AL 36310.
Sam Ross Peebles was born September 16, 1926 in Clopton, Alabama, as the fifth of six children of Grover Cleveland Peebles, Sr. and Bertie Wise Peebles. He graduated from the Dale County High School in Ozark in 1944. Sam served his country two years in the U. S. Army at the end of World War II. Being a WWII veteran, he traveled on the 2010 Wiregrass Honor Flight to Washington in recognition of being a member of the Greatest Generation. In his early years, Sam was associated with the W.W. Peebles and Son Store and Gin Company in Clopton, Alabama. Later, he was employed by the United States Postal Service serving five years as Postmaster and twenty-eight years as a Rural Letter Carrier in the Clopton and Slocomb offices.
Sam was a member of the Clopton United Methodist Church where he served as Usher and Sunday School Superintendent. After moving to Dothan in 1985, he attended First Church of the Nazarene. Sam was preceded in death by sisters, Merle P. Fisher and Doris P. Stump and brothers, Grover C. Peebles, Jr., Mike C. Peebles and Howell Peebles.
Survivors include his wife, of forty-five years, Barbara Sargent Peebles, a daughter, Sandra Peebles Sauls (Paul); two grandsons, Jacob Sauls and Caleb Sauls, all of Dothan; a sister-in-law, Joy Peebles, Atlanta; and several special nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Dan Murphy, Randy Gunter, Jeff Bostick, George Elliot, Marvin Marley and Ron Kaita.
