Samuel Earl Denton, Major, (Retired), U.S. Army, of Dothan, departed this life on March 27, 2014 and climbed the endless bounds of space on his last flight.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held 1:30 pm Tuesday April 1, 2014 at the Sunset Memorial Park Pavilion with Rev. Larry Grimm officiating. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to American Cancer Society or Southern Care Hospice of Dothan.

Major Denton was born June 21st, 1943 in Newton, Alabama. He was the son of the late Sammie I. Denton and Sara P. (Benton) Denton. He graduated from Troy University of Troy, Alabama and Cameron University of Oklahoma. Major Denton was a veteran of the University States Army retiring after 20 years of service in September 1980. His service included two years in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. His military commendations include the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, 36 Air medals - one of which was for valor, a Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, National Defense Service Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal. Major Denton also received the Honorable Order of St. Michael for contributions to Army Aviation, both the Bronze and Silver Award. He has lived in Dothan since 1990, moving here from Daleville, Alabama. Following his retirement from the Army he then began a second career with the Flight Training Contractor at Fort Rucker. He retired from URS Corporation as the Director of Advanced Division on 12 August 2011 after over 30 years of service. He was a Member of the Dothan Elks and MOAA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his loving wife of 51½ years Doris (Luttjohann) Denton, a grandson Michael Samuel Denton, and a brother Tommy Richards, Jr.

He is survived by his son, Michael Earl Denton of Dothan and grandson Alex Taylor Denton of Dothan; two brothers, Dan Denton (Janice) and Michael Denton (Janie); two sisters, Linda Adkinson (Jim) and Diane Williams (Mykle); sister-in-law, Sally Richards; numerous nieces and nephews.
