SAMUEL  JACKSON  CLENNEY, JR.


 


ABBEVILLE. . .Samuel Jackson (Sambo) Clenney, Jr., a resident of Abbeville, died late Monday afternoon, May 7, 2012, in a Dothan hospital. He was 85.


 


            Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Thursday, May 10, 2012, in the Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Bob Pemberton officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery-East. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 P.M. Thursday in the sanctuary of the Calvary Baptist Church.


 


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 310 Dothan Road, Abbeville, AL. 36310.


 


            Mr. Clenney grew up in Montgomery, son of the late Samuel Jackson Clenney, Sr. and Coral Hutto Clenney. He was a graduate of Heard Military Academy in Montgomery and attended Auburn University. He served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and returned to Abbeville where he lived all his adult lifetime. Mr. Clenney retired from Vickrey Auto Supply as a partsman after forty one years employment. After his retirement, he worked part time with Billy Lindsey Auto Parts in Ft. Gaines. In earlier years, Mr. Clenney was employed by the Pittman and Ed Blacklidge Chevrolet dealerships.


 


            Mr. Clenney was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church where he served as Adult Men’s Sunday School teacher and operated the sound system for several years. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Clenney and a brother, George Edward (Snooks) Clenney.


 


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Bettye Doswell Clenney, a daughter, Terry Clenney, a son, Samuel Jackson Clenney, III (Kim Poitevint and children, Brittany Poitevint and Blake Poitevint), all of Abbeville;  a sister, Frances Clenney Dover, Abbeville; sisters-in-law, Rosemarie Doswell Thames and husband, John A., Pensacola, FL; and Faye Perkins Doswell, Abbeville; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews whom he loved dearly.


 


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Billy Lindsey, Roy Neves, Blake Poitevint, Chris Thames, Mark Thames and David Doswell. Serving as honorary pallbearers will members of the Adult Men’s Sunday School classes.
